Coop had time for a quick bite to eat before his call with Alice. He left Gus to help Aunt Camille and his dad clean up the dishes. As was his normal evening tradition, Gus stood by the dishwasher and made sure he wiped any lingering bits of food from each plate. Aunt Camille was usually a soft touch when it came to giving him a few extra bites of whatever meat they had for supper. With his focus on the stack of plates, Gus didn’t even notice Coop leaving the room.

Coop settled in behind his desk and connected the call, waiting for Alice to join the conversation while reviewing the file AB had prepared. Alice lived outside of Dallas and was an accountant. After a few minutes, she popped onto the screen. “Hey, Alice, I appreciate you squeezing me in tonight.”

She smiled and said, “No problem. I’m happy to help.”

Coop went through the basics of his investigation and explained he was looking into the accidents and the fire at the carnival site that killed Frank’s son. Alice nodded as he spoke.

“I remember that morning when I came to work. The day after the fire. It was just horrible. Everyone was so upset and worried.”

Coop asked many of the same questions he had put forth to Bethany and Penny, and Alice confirmed their recollections. She had assisted in payroll and didn’t add much knowledge of the maintenance records but also recalled Gavin wasn’t in the office the morning after the fire.

Coop nodded and said, “Bethany thought you might be able to tell me more about Gavin.”

Her smile faded. “He made it uncomfortable to work there.” She sighed and continued, “It was my first real job, and I wanted to do everything right to make a good impression. He would come into my cubicle, and I wouldn’t even know he was there until I got a weird feeling on the back of my neck. He was creepy and always remarked on what I was wearing or how he liked my hair. I just ignored him because I didn’t want to cause a problem.”

He frowned as he made a note. “Did it go beyond him talking to you and bothering you?”

She shrugged. “Not really. Sometimes he would put his head right on my shoulder as I worked and laugh, like it was fun. He asked me out constantly, and I always said no or that my parents didn’t allow me to date older men. In reality, I guess he was only about four years older, but it was creepy.”

“Did you tell Mr. Covington?”

She shook her head. “No, I didn’t want to cause any problems and needed the job. I was embarrassed to even talk about it. Gavin’s mom worked there, and she was Frank’s assistant. I didn’t want to make waves.”

Coop thought back to the way things worked in that era. It had been commonplace for women, especially young ones new to the workforce, to put up with unwanted advances.

She added, “One day, I told Bethany about it, but it was right before the company was sold.
